If someone doesn't have the skills no record/sample will help them....

I totally agree with his take. I didn't realize it was that common. Besides C2C, who else uses pre-arranged battle records?

Spiderman from Dallas does, but it messed him up, because he used test press and they weren't the best quality. Kept skipping on him.

toadstyle shouldn't have to worry about that stuff since all those kids who were into turntablism a few years back are too busy rocking all-over prints and dressing like jackasses. they don't have time to work on their scratch routine.

Funny that I see a thread about the 2006 DMCs. I just watched it yesterday and I was thinking that the battle scene totally sucks ass. I have tons of battles on VHS and I followed this scene up until about the time Craze started winning his titles. I know the battle scene has been ailing for years now and I think a lot of it has to do with character and sadly, I didn't see one participant that had it. It seemed so robotic. No flavor.
I know battle records have always been used but they weren't used to the extent that they're used today. I think the last set I saw that was comprised of "regular records" was by DJ Dexta from Australia. I forget the year but it was the year he lost in the world finals.
When the 2006 DMC vid came on and the 1st person I saw was Tony Prince I thought, "Damn, he's still involved with this!?!?" [in a negative connotation]
For anyone else that may have seen the 2006 DMCs - do you catch the Z-Trip dialogue sample by Asia [I forget the last name] from Singapore?

the cat who won this year... rafik
watched it, hit cuts were dope and stuff, but it totally lacked any fresh flavor. I havent exactly been keeping up in the DMC scene, or really the turntablist thing lately, so im not sure if this is whats its come down to... the last frresh routine i think i saw was by kentaro. kentaro, who rules.

cosign...man's got great sound.
didn't read the blog but dope is dope, regardless of whether or not the vinyl is custom-made...HOWEVER there is an important element of being creative with/flipping what's available to you that kind of gets lost when you are pressing up your own. I mean that's hip-hop right. but we have all this technology and all these resources to draw from where we can now further freak the beat...and that's a branch off the same tree, albeit in a differently forward-thinking fashion. whatever sounds good I think. its bigger than hip-hop but definitely know your history ya..
edit:two things:
1. judging record selection in a battle may very well encourage creativity and help these DJs with 10 records in their collection to step up their slabgame, and in turn, get a deeper perspective on what being a DJ really means.
2. I believe the "ohhshitican'tbelievehedidthat" factor does get lost on DJs using custom wax...or at least lessened........

co-motherfuckin-sign. Kentaro is dope!
Aside from seeing i.emerg's routines i haven't really bothered to watch any of the routines in the last few years. They just arent as fun to watch anymore
