View Full Version : Question: How many people on here own turntables or cdj's?

A friend of mine is doing a study for their MBA on turntables vs. gutar sales. I was wondering if the crew of this board could help us out. Just post a reply if you have tt's or cdj's or both. Also If anyone (Z?) knows where scratch the movie got that quote that guitars outsold turntables or any info source for this that would be outstanding. Thanks for your time.

Peace

Chalk me up for

2 Turntables

Not sure if a dual CD player counts in this poll, but I have one of those, not a CDJ.

I have not watched the DVD in a while, but I think the quote came from a Vestax rep at a trade show in Japan. I could also be high and not thinking straight right now. Hope this helps.

2 turntables, nothing cd related

Resin's right, that was a sales figure from japan, where turntables did indeed outsell guitars

I'm a pack rat...

5 Turntables ( 3 are 1970's models, 2 are shitty belt-drive tables)
No CDJs yet - I Need some good tables first.

On the other hand, I have 5 guitars (all of which I've had for years now.)

Not sure if this helps...

birdbaff own 2 turntables.

and i'm pretty sure in scratch that music show guy says, 'in England turntables have been outselling guitars.'

(of course like Resin, i may also be confused)

also with that quote take into account you need two turntables vs. one guitar...pretty obvious, but worth mentioning.

maybe Hiero's right about the quote.

i too own two guitars as well, but they jealous of my turntables and vice versa.

Two turntables, no CDJs.

Also, bear in mind that it's easy for turntables to outsell guitars since you need at least two turntables to be a DJ.

I know what you're sayin', but I have a bit of trouble with the overall statement that turntables are outselling (or can easily outsell) guitars. To be fair, I don't have any figures or data to back this up, but do offer the following support:

1. I could be wrong, but there seem to be far more guitar players than DJs.

2. There doesn't seem to be as much demand for turntables. Just look at the ratio of guitar stores to DJ stores - damn, even the ratio of record stores (vinyl) to guitar stores (in the East Bay, anyway)

3. If the demand was there (for turntables), the market would reflect it. (Capitalism dictates...) And to my knowledge, guitar sales haven't dropped off significantly.

Now, I realize I'm speaking about the U.S. only (maybe only part of the U.S. at that), which doesn't necessarily reflect upon other nations' buying trends.

Also, I can believe in Japan turntables are outselling guitars, but worldwide???

I guess I really just don't know...What do you people think???

Why is it when I walk into any Sam Ash, Guitar Center or any other music instrument chain, there's a big DJ section?

And comparing record stores to guitar stores is really apples & oranges. Why don't we start comparing how many records have been pressed vs. the amount of guitars made? That would be silly.

And do you realize the amount of vinyl that has been pressed historically? The art of being a DJ is to seek out those records.

Yo, Butterface,

I do agree that the argument (record stores to guitar stores) is "silly". I made the comparison to demonstrate my main point:

I don't think (worldwide) that Turntables are outselling guitars.

Yes, I realize "the amount of vinyl that has been pressed historically" and I am an avid collector.

"The art of being a DJ is to seek out those records." Not to be argumentative, but I would say thats only part of the art.

I must admit, it's been a long time since I walked into a Guitar Center, so thank you for pointing out that they now have decent sized DJ sections. The last time I was in one (Berkely), they didn't have shit.

But really, do you think turntables are outselling guitars? I hope they are actually, but I just don't see it from where I'm standing.

I know what you're saying, Somebody, and I find the claim to be a bit suspect as well--especially since it was said by a Vestax company rep in Scratch. There's the two turntables vs. one guitar argument, which I think is a major contributing factor. And there's the definite possibility of some fudging going on--like only counting acoustic guitars in the tally or something like that.

Butterface: Guitar Center, Sam Ash (great store), etc. have DJ sections because, quite simply, there's money to be made. Whether or not DJ equipment outsells, say, guitars isn't really the point to them; the point is that there's enough of a profit margin there to make it worthwhile for these companies to get into selling DJ equipment.

whether or not turntables are outselling guitars, i couldn't say. but i sure as shit will say that the RATE OF GROWTH of turntable sales is kicking the shit out of guitars.

electronic music started getting huge like 8 years ago, and now hip-hop is becoming the new "in" thing. so guitar sales may be greater, but i'm betting their growth is stale or not very high. turntables and dj related products, on the other hand, are on fire right now.

I agree with you, Enki. And the fact that stores like Sam Ash or Guitar Center improved their DJ section over the years is rather telling. It used to be all about the smoke & bubble machines, and some dude at the counter that doesn't know jack. Well, that still happens...

BTW, I love catching guys in the recording section talkin all kinds of shit to customers, and then Butter steps in & sets it straight for the customer...heheheheh - Tends to happen more at Guitar Center than Sam Ash :)

7 turns consisting of tt1520's,1200's, ttx1's and ST8-80/ST8-100's. I also own 14 guitars(11 electric, 2 of 'em 7-string Ibanez and a bass guitar). Oh and 2 of those cdj's that American DJ first put out a few years ago. Random percussion instruments..
In my 'hood I don't see the turntable outselling the guitar, BUT... at my local Guitar Center they just ordered a shitload of those new Technics ( I think they're black) and they r selling like hotcakes. Oh and my guitar playing friends can't seem to get their hands off of my tables for some reason....

You know. I might disagree with this. After the Skratch Piklz broke up the skratch movement kind of degenerated and that was a large factor in the growth of turntable music.

I was lucky enough to go to Skratchcon and witnessed their last performance.

Well I work in a music store and guitars definately sell more than turntables. But then again you can get a decent guitar for $250-300, and a turntable costs $850 and you need two. So I think alot of those figures are based on revenue from sales not the amount of pieces of gear out the door.

I thought that quote in Scratch came from the guy that was running the guitar booth. I seem to remember him making that statement about tables outselling guitars and then whining how his booth has "legendary guitarists doing demonstrations" but nobody cared because they were all at the Vestax booth. I could be wrong... I need to bust out my DVD.
