Inaugural 10-4 Mix Comp: Finals

Hello? [taps microphone] Is this thing still on?

Well, it's been a few months now since winners tried to get it together and wrap up this first competition. Understandably, that took some doing.

But the doing's been done, and we're finally ready to keep moving.

If you'll recall, this round features a themed mix from the winners of each of the previous rounds. 1200Terrorist couldn't pull it off, and Aden was unable to get his computer to cooperate long enough to produce something so C.O.D stepped in for him (as runner up in Aden's round, and beating all comers in most rounds entered).

So this is actually a 10-3, which means there's even less commitment on your part, dear listener, to check out what these guys turned in. And since they're already proven contenders, the quality should be up to your discerning tastes. What I'm trying to say is: we better have a record amount of votes and feedback or I might do something drastic.

What's this about a theme, you ask? Here is what the contestants got:

But feel free to be as literal or figurative as you want with this. You've also got movies and current events (Skillz year end wrap-up style) to reference. And I'm sure you can use a year or two before and after and no one will call you on it. And don't get hung up trying to use exclusively music FROM 1992. Update classics with new beats, sample 1992 songs with whatever era acapella, or whatever. This is just supposed to be a basic framework.... A jump off, or reference point. And you've got every genre to work with.

As voters, feel free to factor the use of this theme as heavily (or not) into your decision-making process as you want.

On that note, I'd like to point out to the judges that I strictly adhered to 100% tracks that were released in 1992 ONLY, with the exception of some Licensed To Ill bonus beats that jumped on there when I wasn't looking.

Choosing between these was like trying to decide which of the first two Pharcyde albums was better. my vote changed a bunch of times, but I figure I should just vote with my gut. Honestly, this was the hardest one to vote in, partly because they all had a similar feel, but mostly because the skill was top notch on all the mixing, not one fudge in the whole 30 minutes.

Venk: I felt your mix was the most diverse and trying to appeal to the largest range. It had a bit of everything in it and encapsulated the year the best. A very solid mix, one of the best I've heard from you.

COD: I went with your mix, just because it managed to sound like THE mix I would've liked to hear back in 92, had I been into hip hop then. It focused on a hip hop mix, and I found my head nodding to it, every transition made me want to hear the next song, it built anticipation.

Strategy: this was a great mix, I loved the use of Dre and co through it, it was kinda ballsy to drop on this forum, and again, I really enjoyed it.



No joke, I nearly just flipped coins to choose here, but after like 5-6 listen throughs, I found my head nodding a *tiny* bit more when COD's entry came on. Hardest one to vote on, all three were VERY solid.

Typing as I listen so a bit erratic sorry but………..


MR VENK – sheesh that intro sounds like a proper production style mixtape intro. Real healthy. Straight into Diamon D one of my favourites, it indeed is, that shit. Clever into Gangstarr but I felt it broke the flow up a little without a mix… more juggles of doom, lovely.… hold on.is that Iron Maiden? .. whered that come from. Ahh back to the hip hop. Nice blend here with sally n boy band (forget name) it works. My 2nd favourite DD tune lol. Next mix is sick and so is the juggle, really cool. The end – im not sure what to say about it,. First off, I like it cool use of serato queue points (im assuming?) It’s a great idea to add something like this into the mix too. All in all a dope mix I enjoyed listening to. + bonus point for white men cant jump quotes.


MR COD - Ahhhh ayyeeeee, like this so fah aaarrrrr….the blend was dope, and into das efx was just right. A bit bass heavy on the mix or maybe its my earphones? Dunno? Urgh, T.R.O.Y. One of my all time favourites. Ok into Bran Nub. So far the tune selection has been 100% nice, oh and it still is. You guys are affirming that 90s hip hop was by far better than most stuff released today. Fuck what ya hurd to Soul Clap was bad ass. Again another dope mix, I prefered the tune selection on this one more than venks but I think venks mix’s were a lil more smooth on the whole.


MR STRATEGY – Not sure of the movie but the dialogue was interesting. Theres a lot going on right after this, I dunno if that was you or a tune but either way it was really nice. Sounds like a more chilled pace of mix a lot of west coast in here. Your mixing is smooth all the way through n is that redman? It’s a cool tune either way . My only little gripe is that you maybe lingered a little longer on each tune than the other entries which did make my ears wander a little. Other than that sick mix.

This was a tough one for me, I think my vote needs to go to Venk because I felt that technically his mix was more sound.
